Borderlands 4 Revamps Loot & Co-Op for a Better Experience

Gearbox revealed some big improvements for Borderlands 4 at Pax East making the game better in many ways.

I still can't believe Gearbox moved up the release of Borderlands 4. It's my most anticipated game of 2025 and now I get to play it earlier than expected. which is awesome. Gearbox seems really confident about how BL4 is shaping up especially after their recent Pax East panel where they showed us more of the game along with a lot of great improvements. If Borderlands 3 wasn't perfect for you don't worry Gearbox is listening.

As the release of Borderlands 4 gets closer Gearbox understands how important co-op gameplay is. I've always played the series with two characters one solo and one with friends. So I'm excited to share that the online system is being improved for Borderlands 4.

At the Pax panel Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford mentioned that the team improved the co-op game's lobby system making it easier to connect with others. You can join or leave the game anytime. So you and your friends don't have to be at the same part of the game to play together.

The best part is the new fast travel to friends feature. In Borderlands 4. the world will be huge and you’ll probably go off to do your own thing sometimes. But now you can quickly travel to anyone in your group. So you can easily join them for a tough boss fight.

Like Borderlands 3 the new game will also have level scaling. This means you can join a friend’s game at any point without worrying about enemies being too strong. Pitchford said the game will handle it no matter the difficulty. Loot will be personal too. So everyone gets their own items without the risk of them being taken.

In Borderlands 4 Gearbox is changing how loot works. They are making it simpler so you don’t get overwhelmed by too many mechanics. This means you’ll find fewer legendary items compared to Borderlands 3 but the ones you do find will feel more powerful and unique.

In Borderlands 4 loot won’t be left to chance. Every miniboss and big encounter will drop something special. So you'll always feel rewarded for your time. If you like grinding you can still do that too. The game introduces Moxxi's Big Encore Machine which lets you replay missions and bosses without having to reload saves to farm specific loot.

Borderlands 4 looks like it could be the best game in the series. The Gearbox team listened to our feedback on Borderlands 3 and is making changes to loot and adding new features to improve the game. The combat is also getting a big update. So I'm really excited to try it out.
