What to Expect Europa Universalis 5 Gameplay
Europa Universalis 5 is similar to previous games in the series. You choose a country to lead from medieval times to the 20th century. You fight wars trade manage your people and set government policies. But EU5 makes big changes bringing back features from the first three games adding ideas from other Paradox games and introducing new concepts of its own.
EU5 adds automation to many systems dividing them into four categories: gardener explorer, conqueror and trader. You can automate the whole category or specific tasks like deciding what to build or which tech to research. You can turn automation on or off whenever needed like automating trade while managing a war and turning it off after the conflict ends.
The Policy Sliders from earlier Europa Universalis games return in the Societal Value system. These sliders show opposing political ideas like communalism vs. individualism or tradition vs. innovation. At the start of the game, nations will already be on certain points of each slider and more sliders will unlock as you play. You can appoint government officials to boost certain values or create policies to shift your nation’s direction. Changing a noble-run feudal society into a peasant-led utopia is tough but possible.
Population models and trade systems have been completely changed. Instead of large population groups EU5 uses individual units called pops. Each pop has a religion, location, culture, employment rate and literacy rate. This makes it easier to model minority cultures and diverse populations. For trade EU5 no longer uses merchants and trade nodes. Instead you'll manage trade directly with other nations and markets shipping the products your provinces make.
One big change from previous games is that there is no MANA system. You won’t need points to do things anymore. Instead you can choose actions directly. but they still have costs. The leaders and advisors of each nation have skills in administration diplomacy and military. These skills show how long actions will take and how well they will work.
