FBC Firebreak a new game from Control has exciting missions that are a bit wild and fun. It looks like it will be a great game to play with friends.
We have seen this happen before. A popular game studio makes great story-based games for one player. Then they make a multiplayer game to please investors but it fails. But Remedy Entertainment’s new game FBC Firebreak feels different. It is a co-op shooter set in the world of their game Control. It has strange characters different difficulty levels and short game sessions. It does not use the usual live service style. After playing it for about three hours. I can say it is really fun even if it is not very new.
FBC Firebreak is a different game from Control but it takes place in the same world. It also uses surprises like the first game. You don’t need to play Control before Firebreak but it might make Firebreak more fun. In the story a group called the Hiss is attacking the Federal Bureau of Control. Teams of three workers go into the most dangerous parts of the building to fight them and clean the area.
The missions called jobs can be crazy and hard sometimes. But getting ready in FBC Firebreak is easy. The most important part of your gear is the crisis kit. I used the splash kit during the preview. It has a water cannon to put out fires a fountain that heals people nearby and a special power that shoots hot water like a flamethrower. Even though this kit helps more than fights I still had a lot of fun using it.
Your three-player team can all use the same crisis kit but it’s better if you spread out the kits. Some kits work better for certain tasks. For example the fix kit is best for repairs. However any player can do any task by playing a minigame though it takes more time and can leave you open to attacks from nearby enemies called Hiss.
Your gear includes a main weapon (I liked using the MP40-style submachine gun) and a grenade. That's it. You don’t have to spend time changing parts on your guns or picking from lots of gadgets. It’s easy to use. You can buy upgrades for your kit, weapon and grenade with a special currency called lost assets. Perks let you improve your setup more but everything stays simple without being too basic or too hard.
FBC Firebreak’s shooting is not too hard but you still need to be careful with your ammo. You can find shelters in the game that work as places to come back after you die. These shelters also have extra bullets, grenades and health. The game encourages you to explore every part of the levels because you might find special files hidden around.
The match goals have some unusual ideas from Remedy and many challenges like fighting the Hiss. I was surprised by the many different enemies and how each one is dangerous in its own way. There are also other dangers like hot rays that come from big industrial fans.
Firebreak's biggest strength is how it uses elements. At first I thought it would be simple like fire putting out water or water carrying electricity. But it is much more detailed and interesting than that.
Using a fire extinguisher can freeze enemies near water or put out fire on you if you are burning and can’t stop drop and roll. Riding a zipline or falling from high up can also put out flames because of the wind. Some radioactive things give you a sickness that slowly hurts your health. This makes the game fun to try different things but sometimes it’s hard to know what killed me during a fight because the small icons on the screen are hard to see.
Firebreak is fun to play. It doesn’t have new ideas but it gives you lots of exciting fights teamwork and chances to play again. You’ll also have many memorable moments. The best thing about Firebreak happens even before you start shooting.
Remedy lets you change how hard and how long each game run is. You pick a clearance level Which decides how many areas you need to finish in a mission. You can do just one area which might take about five minutes or all three areas with a big boss at the end. Then there is the threat level which makes the game harder by adding more enemies and stronger bad guys called Hiss. Finally the corruption level adds extra challenges and makes you find special corrupted items hidden in each mission.
Menu options might not seem very exciting, but they are very important. They help players come back to the game make it easy for casual and busy players to enjoy and also keep fans of tough co-op shooters happy.
I had some trouble liking FBC Firebreak at first. I started to enjoy it more in the second half of my preview. I’m a bit worried it takes a while to really get into the game. Once it gets going. it’s fun but it’s not as easy to enjoy right away as some other games.
I'm still really excited to keep playing FBC Firebreak. I want to try the jobs and bosses I haven't seen yet use the other kits and make the game harder for more fun. Many multiplayer games ask too much time follow strict seasons and have complex rules. Firebreak feels simple and Refreshing.
