League of Legends might be getting a big change soon some game files show that players could soon move their characters using the WASD keys.
League of Legends like most MOBAs has always used point-and-click controls to move characters. This method fits well with the game’s strategy and fast-paced battles. Even though many PC games use WASD keys to move LoL hasn’t done that until now. A recent data leak suggests Riot Games might soon let players move with WASD keys which would be a big change for the game.
League of Legends once tried using WASD movement in a special game mode called Swarm. Which came out in 2024. But this seemed more like a fun side experiment not a serious test for the main game. Swarm was a PvE mode that felt more like a bullet-hell shooter than a traditional MOBA and it only included a few champions like Jinx, Seraphine and Yasuo.
It looks like WASD controls might be coming to League of Legends soon. Yesterday a dataminer named SkinSpotlights found a line of code in the latest PBE patch that suggested WASD movement could be added. Today they looked deeper and found even more including actual menu screens showing the new option.
SkinSpotlights shared images showing two control options: Classic Controls let you move with your mouse and Modern Controls let you use the WASD keys. Even if you turn on WASD movement. You can still move with the mouse. Flash has three settings: Cursor WASD with Cursor Enhanced and WASD with Cursor Fallback. There are also two advanced options you can check: one makes left-click do auto attack move and the other makes spells cast in the direction your character is moving.
If League of Legends changes to using WASD keys to move. it will be a big change. Some players might like it because it could be easier or better. But players who are used to moving with the mouse might need to learn again if WASD becomes the new way to play.
Some people wonder if the new WASD movement is for all of League of Legends or just for special new game modes. like in Swarm. I think it’s more than just a limited mode because they’re making full options menus for it. But Riot hasn’t officially said anything about changing how movement works. Even though the data found in the game suggests this might come later it’s still not 100% certain.
