Even though I haven't played much of The Elder Scrolls. I'm really hooked on Oblivion Remastered and the world of Cyrodiil.
The last few weeks have been full of nostalgia for Oblivion Remastered. Fans who spent hours in the 2006 original are excited to revisit it. Favorite characters bugs and hidden secrets are all there now updated with Unreal Engine 5. But without the nostalgia. how does Oblivion's world really hold up? As someone who only played a little Skyrim I wanted to find out. Also as a big Fallout fan. I wondered if this could convince me that I have been picking the wrong RPG series all along.
Oblivion Remastered passed my main test for open-world games right away. After leaving the sewers. it made me feel like the main story could wait. The prompt telling me to explore at my own pace matched how I felt when I first saw the view of the lake island ruins and mountains. It was a moment that made me want to explore Bethesda really nails that first world reveal.
After hours of exploring caves and ruins I finally decide to follow the big red quest marker. I could have fast-traveled to my goal but the earlier exploration made me feel walking was better. I usually avoid fast travel in big RPGs but I can’t remember ever wanting to use it less than in Oblivion Remastered. That might be the best compliment I can give it.
What's interesting is that the world still feels engaging even without obvious clues showing you where to go next. In newer RPGs like Avowed there's usually something in view or a clear path pointing you to the next spot. Oblivion Remastered does this too with trails or distant ruins but not as often or as obviously.
There were times when I walked through fields or mountain paths without a clear goal but I kept going. I even enjoyed the quiet and the view. Keep in mind I had never been to Cyrodiil before. I'm not someone who gets excited about hiking to visit old places I remember. The fact that this nearly 20-year-old world still pulls me in even as a newcomer shows how well it was designed.
I'm not sure how far I am in the main quest but I don't think I've made much progress even though. I've played for almost 30 hours. The scenery the fun exploration and the excitement of finding surprises keep me going.
Oblivion Remastered still has some old-fashioned elements that can be annoying. but I don’t mind. The world of Cyrodiil and its people make up for the game's flaws it's better than many modern RPGs even though it's older.
Even if you've never played TES 4 or any Elder Scrolls game Oblivion Remastered can still grab your attention even after all these years. I'm proof that you can enjoy it without the nostalgia.
Playing Oblivion Remastered has made me feel a bit of regret. I've spent so much time in the Fallout universe and that's fine but I wonder why I didn't give Oblivion and the Elder Scrolls series more attention.
A long time ago I’m not sure why Skyrim didn’t grab me when I first tried it or why I missed out on the Elder Scrolls series. All I know is that my time in Cyrodiil is both hard and fun I regret not giving The Elder Scrolls the same attention I gave Fallout.
