There are plenty of great turn-based strategy games and tactical RPGs out there like XCOM 2 and Baldur's Gate 3. But I'm always looking for the next big hit and Prelude Dark Pain seems like it could be one. It's a dark fantasy story where heroes try to save the land of Statera from an ancient evil. The game combines stunning artwork with grid-based combat. It's already been a success with developer Quickfire Games reaching its funding goal just hours after launching its Kickstarter.

Will already tried out Prelude Dark Pain and liked its setup especially the way positions and flanking work during battles. You play as Soren a young blacksmith and lead a team of five made up of over 20 heroes from eight classes. Each hero has two talent branches and 25 skills to choose from. This gives a lot of room for strategy and creativity which is what makes the best turn-based RPGs great.

In between battles you will focus on stopping the Order of the Ashen Crusade and its leader the Lord of Pain. This is similar to The Witcher 3’s fight against The Wild Hunt. Like that game Quickfire adds lots of sidequests and things to explore expanding the world and its characters. The tasks you choose and the decisions you make can affect which heroes join you and even change the outcome of your main mission.

As you travel through Statera you'll meet over 20 different cultures. some friendly and some hostile. You'll also be able to manage your home settlement upgrade weapons craft new gear and send heroes not in your main party on missions to help people gather resources or learn about your enemies.

Everything looks great and the response has been amazing so far. The Prelude Dark Pain Kickstarter started with a goal of €40,000 ($45,250 / £33,997). But within 12 hours it surpassed that goal and is now at €54,039 ($61,132 / £45,930) and still growing. If it keeps this pace Quickfire will have many stretch goals to unlock.

If the goal hits €60,000 they will add a ranked mode and battle maps with special gameplay bonuses. At €75,000 they will expand the crafting system with more recipes and patterns. At €100,000 a new world map will be introduced. And at €120,000 a new Demon Hunters world quest with four new heroes will be unlocked.

Quickfire Games will release Prelude Dark Pain on Steam Early Access in 2026. You can add it to your wishlist now to get updates.
