XDefiant game director Mark Rubin says the multiplayer FPS failed because Ubisoft did not give enough resources and did not do enough marketing.
Ubisoft’s multiplayer shooter game XDefiant which had characters from games like Tom Clancy, Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry has closed its servers. The game was meant to compete with Call of Duty but didn’t succeed. The game director, Mark Rubin said he is leaving game development to spend more time with his family. He also said the game didn’t get enough marketing and support which caused it to fail.
It is a sad day for XDefiant fans and the hardworking developers who made the game says Rubin. Our writer Jamie said a nice goodbye to XDefiant earlier this week. I didn’t play as much as Jamie but I feel the same. Rubin’s team made a fun multiplayer game that reminded people of the old Call of Duty games when it worked well. But because there are many games today and Black Ops 6 is very popular XDefiant could not stay successful.
Something special happened with this game. Even though we didn’t do much marketing it got the most players quickly in the first weeks for a Ubisoft game. This happened because you all were talking about and sharing the game Rubin says. But sadly since we didn’t have much marketing especially after the launch we didn’t get many new players after the beginning.
He talks about other problems the studio had like using old technology that wasn’t made for their work. They didn’t have enough engineers to fix these problems. Because of this the game’s online system didn’t work well if the internet was even a little unstable. Rubin thinks making your own game engine is not worth it now because big engines like Unreal are much better.
Rubin says that the content in Season 3 wasn’t enough for the game’s launch. He explains that XDefiant had problems because they didn’t have enough resources to create enough content. Rubin thinks that the features planned for Seasons 4 and 5 would have finished the game properly for its launch.
Rubin says that everyone wanted to do well but they didn’t have enough resources to keep the free-to-play game going. When asked about the broken ranked mode he said they knew about it but didn’t have enough staff to fix it.
Rubin says a big thank you to the other developers. He explains that the team working on XDefiant was let go at the end of last year. Many have found new jobs at other studios Which is good. He hopes those still looking find work soon. He especially likes the game’s level designs and thinks they are some of the best maps made for an arcade shooter. I agree with him. The game’s best feature was its high-quality and consistent arenas.
To finish Rubin says he is leaving the game industry for now to spend more time with his family. He really cares about shooter games and hopes someone else will continue making games that respect and listen to the players. He thanks everyone who was excited about XDefiant.
