Fallout 3 Combat vs. Modern Shooters: What Original Devs Hope for in the Remaster

Two years ago a Bethesda document was accidentally shared during the FTC case about the Microsoft Activision Blizzard buyout. The document revealed plans for an Oblivion remaster (which released yesterday) and a Fallout 3 remaster expected to launch in the same year as The Elder Scrolls 6.

Fans are worried the project might be cancelled because there hasn’t been much news about it. However an insider said last week that it’s still happening. but it will take some time before we see it. So VideoGamer asked Fallout 3 designer Bruce Nesmith what he would like to see in this rumored return to the Wasteland.

What you see in Fallout 4 shows what Bethesda thought needed to change from Fallout 3. Nesmith said In Fallout 4 they focused a lot on improving gun combat because Fallout 3 was their first attempt at a shooter-style game. I think the improvements they made were amazing.

Fallout 3's Gunplay Was Not Good Says Original Developer

Nesmith admitted that the shooting in Fallout 3 was not good. He wasn't just talking about it now but also back when it was released. At the time it was up against big games like Left 4 Dead and the often overlooked Far Cry 2.

The game always felt old but a remaster could fix its biggest issue. Nesmith said It's an RPG shooter not a run-and-gun shooter. He also mentioned that a lot of work was done on Fallout 4 so he expects similar improvements if they are doing the same for this game.

Nesmith thinks the remaster will be more like a remake similar to how Oblivion was updated. He believes the next-gen visuals will be much better than the latest Fallout game saying Oblivion wasn’t just upgraded to look like Skyrim it looks even better than the latest graphics update in Skyrim.

Fallout 3 Remastered was originally planned to release with TES6 and with the Oblivion remake just out. it might be a few years before we can play it. Still it is exciting to think about the game which changed the series from isometric cRPG to first-person shooter getting a long-needed update to fix its floaty gunplay. Who knows maybe New Vegas will get an update too.
