Why The Elder Scrolls 6 Should Take Inspiration from an Oblivion Remaster

A long time ago Bethesda was the king of RPG games. Morrowind was a big breakthrough and later Oblivion and Fallout 3 became huge hits on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Skyrim was one of the most famous games ever but it also marked the beginning of some changes in how Bethesda made their games.

From this point on things became more basic. Skyrim is still a great RPG but it wasn’t as deep as Bethesda’s earlier games. That helped it appeal to more people which made sense. But Fallout 4 got mixed reviews because the game stayed simple. Starfield feels more like the old Bethesda style though people had mixed feelings about it too.

Now that The Elder Scrolls 6 is being developed Bethesda shouldn’t ignore the importance of its classic style especially since Oblivion is more popular than ever.

Gamers Are Craving Deeper More Immersive RPGs Again

Earlier this year Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was released. It is a sequel to the 2018 RPG by Warhorse Studios that many people missed. The new game got a lot of perfect reviews and showed that people still enjoy deep and complex RPGs. It also became more popular by getting content creators and streamers to play it. without losing the game's rich detail.

Now we have Oblivion Remastered. It uses Unreal Engine 5 to look much better. but the main game is still the same. Fans love that it stays true to the original and it’s even more exciting to see new players try it for the first time.

After seeing how people reacted especially compared to Fallout 4 or Fallout 76 and Starfield. I really hope Bethesda learns the right lessons. During the reveal of Oblivion Remastered Todd Howard said Every time we think about Oblivion it’s What if we could give that moment to everybody again? Even though he was talking about the remaster. I hope the team keeps that in mind while working on The Elder Scrolls 6. We need to feel that magic again.

The Missing RPG Elements We Need to Bring Back

Oblivion makes you feel like everything you do helps you grow. As you play your skills improve not only helping you level up but also allowing you to do things like hold your bow longer shoot while jumping or dodge in combat. You won't start with these abilities so it feels like you have earned them. Skyrim also has skill trees to unlock things. but they often feel like just small increases like a 15% boost before you get something exciting later. It does not feel as natural or rewarding as Oblivion.

Oblivion had a Karma system similar to Fallout’s which Fallout 4 didn’t fully use. In Oblivion you could convince people to like you bribe them or boost your personality skill to be more charming and get help or info.

In Oblivion the class system is better. Bethesda games usually don’t lock you into one class and Skyrim completely removes them letting you use Standing Stones for leveling boosts. While it makes sense from a gameplay perspective Oblivion guesses your class and lets you change it or even create a new one with your own name. This matters a lot for role-playing something Skyrim didn’t quite offer.

The Elder Scrolls 6 has a lot to live up to. Besides The Elder Scrolls Online and Oblivion Remastered we have not spent much time in Tamriel for the last 14 years. During that time Fallout and Starfield haven't been great. It's great to see Oblivion back but I hope Bethesda remembers that popularity as we get closer to returning to Tamriel.
