If you thought Elden Ring Nightreign would ignore the story because it's a multiplayer game Remembrances will change your mind.
FromSoftware is known for making amazing dark fantasy RPGs and a big part of their success is the deep story and lore in these games. With Elden Ring Nightreign. it's understandable if the story takes a bit of a backseat. Games like Destiny 2 have shown that multiplayer and storytelling can work together but they've had years to perfect it. For FromSoftware Nightreign is their first try at this. But I shouldn’t have doubted them. New details about the game show that each of the eight classes will have their own story told through text playable single-player parts and side missions that you can do in multiplayer.
If you've already played Elden Ring you know that Remembrances are items you get from defeating powerful bosses. These items can be exchanged for Runes or used to get special weapons and spells. But in Elden Ring Nightreign Remembrances work in a completely different way.
After defeating certain bosses you will still get Remembrances. But now they will also be used to tell the backstories of the eight class characters called Nightfarers. These characters not only offer different playstyles and help your team create strong strategies but they also have their own interesting stories to share.
Between battles You'll be able to check out the Remembrances you find in the Roundtable Hold library. Inside you'll find a journal that keeps track of them. The game director Junya Ishizaki shared with IGN that these Remembrances offer pieces of the story and world lore. Some will be written down while others will be playable memories. You can play these memories by yourself no need for a team and they let you experience key moments of each Nightfarer's life. During these memories you'll also meet NPCs who will give you side quests.
These are extra tasks you need to do during multiplayer play to move your character's story forward. According to IGN this can mean going to a specific place to defeat a miniboss which only appears once you unlock that part of the story, or finding an item in a difficult-to-reach area.
I didn't think FromSoft would focus much on the story in Nightreign. I figured they'd just set up the basics and explain what's happening in this version of The Lands Between since most players come for the co-op action. But they ended up making sure there was enough lore for fans to dive into more than just reading a few text snippets.
