Heart Machine's new update for Hyper Light Breaker Buried Below changes the early-access roguelike into a completely new game.
Hyper Light Breaker didn’t have a good launch. The early-access game from Heart Machine had unfinished gameplay and mechanics leading to a mixed reception on Steam. The game also strayed far from the original Hyper Light Drifter making it hard for players to give it a fair shot. But things may be changing now with the games biggest update, which brings major improvements and changes.
We didn't give it a score at launch. but our early access review of Hyper Light Breaker found many issues with Heart Machine's game. It had a rough start with a weak intro, a broken gameplay loop and co-op problems. The game didn't quite work. However the new update, Buried Below might fix many of these issues.
Breaker now has a solid tutorial. After watching a new intro cinematic you will learn the basics of the game in a safe space. Once done. you will head to the Cursed Outpost hub area, giving you a better start in the game. There's also a practice area for advanced combat moves like dash attacks and parries. So you can avoid losing a run due to not knowing the games details.
Once you finish the tutorial you will see that Hyper Light Breaker has a new structure. It's now more like a traditional roguelike which makes it easier to start but harder to master. You only have one life. So if you die, you lose everything. To avoid this you can buy medkits or extract your loot more often. Now instead of one extraction point you can leave through any shrine in the Overgrowth, without enemy waves stopping you. These changes make the game easier and fairer than before.
Breaker’s playable characters have changed. Each now has only one SyCom which helps define your build with multiple perks to choose from. Heart Machine is making each character feel like a unique class encouraging you to try them all and create your own builds.
Heart Machine has updated the inventory and vendors to make the game smoother. Now the only item that stays in your vault when you die is Golden Rations, the main currency for progression. This lets you focus on finding new gear during your runs. Vendors now have different roles hub stores no longer sell gear. but offer upgrades instead. Stores you find in runs now only require Brightblood to buy items making them simpler to use.
The Buried Below update adds more than just mechanical changes. You can now play as Rondo a new character who uses dual balanced blades instead of other weapons. The update also introduces two new blades: the Gloom Shiv and Dreamblade. These weapons give you new ways to fight like using a spinning polearm or a curved sword for fast powerful attacks.
Buried Below is out now and I'm hopeful that Heart Machine can improve Hyper Light Breaker. Steam Early Access lets them listen to players and make changes based on feedback. which is exactly what they are doing. It is a long journey but Breaker’s full launch could turn into a roguelike worth remembering.
The Buried Below update for Heart Machine's Hyper Light Breaker is out now. You can get the game for 20% off until Tuesday May 6. for $23.99 / £19.99.
