In 2024 Grand Theft Auto 5 was the most-watched game on Twitch with people watching it for over 1.4 billion hours. Most of that time was spent watching GTA Online roleplay. Where players pretend to live different lives in the game. These can be silly or very serious with things like jobs and traffic rules. GTA roleplay became more popular in 2024 even leading to a movie called Grand Theft Hamlet which I didn’t like but it’s on big streaming services. You can only play GTA roleplay on PC using special modded servers.
In 2024 people aren’t really watching others play the GTA 5 story mode or blow things up in GTA Online. Racing is still a bit fun to watch But it mostly shows up in low-quality TikTok clips. What’s really keeping the game popular and making Rockstar a lot of money is GTA RP.
GTA Online makes so much money that Rockstar canceled single-player DLC for GTA 5. They keep adding new cars, events, heists and more to keep players spending money. It’s probably one of the most successful games ever. On Steam alone over 200,000 people play it every day.
So why isn’t GTA 6 coming to PC at launch?
Rockstar has mostly made GTA games for consoles. GTA IV had a lot of problems on PC and never got an official fix. So fans had to improve it with mods. GTA V came to PC months after it first came out on consoles even though it was supposed to launch on both at the same time. The latest GTA 6 trailer doesn't show a PC version at all.
A console release makes sense for a game like GTA. It's easy to play very popular and best enjoyed while sitting on your couch. I'm not trying to compare PC and console here. but I don't understand why a big game isn't being released on a platform where many people already play it. It is making me wonder if there’s something else going on.
Just a Silly Theory But Hear Me Out
You would expect a big company like Rockstar supported by one of the largest video game publishers to have a PC version ready when releasing one of the most highly anticipated games in years. It's hard to understand why the PC version isn't ready after more than ten years of development. Why would they miss out on so many PC players eager to buy the game?
I think it's because people like me will buy the game twice. The real big spenders will buy it three times: once on current consoles once on PC and again on the next generation of consoles. Which shouldn’t be too far off. With GTA 6 possibly costing around $100 that’s a lot of money to make. Honestly I’m surprised the game hasn’t been delayed to Release with the PS6 but Take-Two would miss out on selling it on current consoles So that’s unlikely to happen.
The real question isn’t whether Rockstar is making a mistake by ignoring PC players at the launch of GTA 6. but whether they’re doing this to make more money. With the way big games have changed recently and all the stories about rising game costs and layoffs it seems like Take-Two is trying to make as much money as they can from this release.
