I'm surprised how well city-building and survival games work together. Normally they seem like opposites. City builders like Cities: Skylines and Manor Lords focus on growing, building and getting rich. Survival games like Project Zomboid, The Long Dark and The Forest are about starting with nothing and slowly trying to stay alive. But games like Frostpunk 2 and Endzone mix both styles really well. A new game called Dark Switch just shown at the PC Gaming Show also combines these two genres. And it has music by Akira Yamaoka the composer from Silent Hill.

Dark Switch reminds me a bit of Age of Mythology. It's set in a strange post-apocalyptic fantasy world. The world is still colorful and full of magical creatures but a dark force called The Fog has ruined most of it. The surface of the planet is now underwater So the last people have moved into a huge tree to survive. In the game you build a city in this tree. Space is limited so you have to build upwards instead of outwards.

Collect resources learn new technologies and keep your people happy. You can build small outposts away from your main tree city but don't use too many supplies. Sometimes scary creatures from the Fog will attack your home. So Dark Switch also feels like a survival game where you have to make weapons and defenses to stay safe and protect your city.

Dark Switch looks very promising. It has a sandbox mode a 12-hour story with quests and different choices and over 80 types of buildings. The music is by Akira Yamaoka. You can add it to your wishlist now.
