Before releasing Dying Light The Beast Techland is updating the first game with the new Retouched Update which makes it look even better than it did back in 2015.
It’s been 10 years since Techland released the first Dying Light and in that time the game has become one of the biggest names in zombie games right up there with Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead. Even now it has a 95% rating on Steam based on over 340,000 user reviews and around 10,000 people still play it every day. These numbers might get even higher soon because Techland has announced a big new upgrade for the game and the best part is it’s completely free for anyone who already owns it. With Dying Light The Beast coming soon this is the perfect time to jump back in.
Earlier this year in January Techland hinted at some major improvements for the original Dying Light. It’s been more than a decade since players first followed Kyle Crane into the zombie-filled city of Harran. Now the new Retouched Update adds extra polish and improvements making an already great zombie game even better.
Dying Light franchise director Tymon SmektaÅ‚a wants players to know right away that this is not a full remaster. He says Let’s set the record straight the Retouched Update is about getting even more out of the Dying Light you already enjoy. It’s not a complete overhaul or remaster.
This means the game isn’t being completely changed but it will look better. Techland has improved the texture quality in parts of Harran to make the visuals sharper. For example they showed a side-by-side image of upgraded wooden wall panels to highlight the changes.
The lighting and graphics in Dying Light have been improved especially for shiny surfaces like metal which now reflect light more realistically. The game's level of detail has also been upgraded from 260% to 340% so if you're using a powerful PC you'll see clearer and more detailed visuals even from far away.
Techland has also added new music and background sounds to make the city of Harran feel more alive. According to Smektała the sounds during combat have been boosted too. Every hit, crunch and zombie takedown will now feel more intense and satisfying to hear.
Techland is giving a free update called the Dying Light Retouched Update to everyone who owns the game on PC, PlayStation or Xbox. This update will be available on Thursday, June 26.
After this update comes out fans won’t have to wait long for the release of Dying Light The Beast. In fact my teammate Jamie got to try the new game early at Summer Game Fest and his preview gives a great look at what to expect before it launches.
