Towerborne is a co-op action RPG with soulslike gameplay fighting mechanics and Diablo-style loot. It’s now available on Game Pass with new class skills.
Towerborne was one of the biggest surprises at Gamescom 2024. I’m usually picky about side-scrolling brawlers but Stoic and Xbox’s new co-op game impressed me. Its smooth combo-based combat inspired by fighting games and soulslikes works really well. The game also offers lots of gear and class options like Diablo or Borderlands. Towerborne is now available and its sixth update adds a new class progression system more missions and extra loot on Xbox and PC Game Pass.
From its base in the Belfry humanity's last safe place. you and your friends set out across the world of Towerborne shown on a large hex-grid map. The game stands out because of its action. Towerborne mixes spaced-out fighting combo juggling and Umbra support characters inspired by fighting games. Lead combat designer Isaac Torres known for his work on Injustice Divekick, and Killer Instinct helped shape these features. The game also includes soulslike controls with light and heavy combos dodging and class-specific skills like magic stealth and parries.
The result is very satisfying and all I wanted was more missions and ways to upgrade my character. The Towerborne update six delivers that and more including the games launch on Xbox consoles and Game Pass plus crossplay. Now as you level up each class. You will unlock a wide range of skills in five categories: focus weapon mechanics moveset advanced combat and support.
These skills use up a part of your skill point budget so you can choose the ones that fit your playstyle. There's also new legendary gear including weapons for all classes. You can find them during Danger Level five missions or in boss lairs. The Aspects that give extra bonuses to your gear have been updated with new options for your helm chest and weapon. Plus there are two more Umbra to find.
Step out of the Belfry and you will see a new world map designed for a better and more exciting experience. There are over 50 new missions a better questline with some changes to the story, more random encounters and new map art. You can also use the group finder to match with other players based on your current goal and Danger Level So you always have someone to play with.
The battlefield has been updated. Input buffering is better making it easier to chain moves. The block break is faster and can now be jump-canceled. Powderkeg Punch and Shadow Feint skills have been improved. The respawn and lives system is gone and replaced with the Mender's Flask. Which heals you a few times. You can refill it at shrines and upgrade it as you progress.
Towerborne is out and now available for Xbox and PC Game Pass subscribers. It's also on Steam but you need to buy a founder's pack (starting at $24.99 / £21.99) to play. The full game will be free after early access. Check out update six for a list of balance changes new features and fixes.
